The main purpose of your roof is to shield your home from common weather elements such as rainfall and wind. What a lot of people may not realize is that it is also important to have a fire-resistant roof to ensure better protection for the residents and interior belongings. In general, there are four classifications of fire ratings for roofs: Class A, Class B, Class C and unrated. In this article, a reputable storm damage company discusses the meaning behind these fire ratings.

Class A Roofing

A roof with a class A rating is the ideal choice for residential properties. There are times when building codes require homeowners to install a Class A roof depending on their place of residence. This roofing type is particularly crucial if you live in or near an area that is prone to wildfires. A roof that is considered to have a Class A rating must be able to withstand severe fire exposure. It should last two to four hours before ignition and experience a maximum flame spread of six feet.

Some of the common Class A roofing materials are slate, clay tiles and concrete tiles.

Class B Roofing

A roof with a fire rating of Class B is effective against moderate exposure to fire. It generally experiences a maximum flame spread of eight feet, as opposed to six in Class A roofs, and lasts an hour before ignition. According to a roof inspection technician, pressure-treated shakes and shingles are the most common examples of roofing materials that fall under the Class B rating.

Class C Roofing

A roof that has a Class C fire rating can only provide a home with light protection against fire. The maximum flame spread it experiences is normally 13 feet. In addition, a Class C roof can only give a 20-minute window before it starts to ignite. Untreated wood shakes and shingles are examples of Class C building materials.

Unrated Roofing

A roof that cannot pass the minimal requirements of a Class C roofing is considered unrated. It provides little to no protection against fire and should be avoided at all times. In fact, plenty of building codes do not accommodate any kind of unrated roofing material.
